Position Description As a Revenue Auditor 2 or Revenue Auditor 2 In‑Training, you will join a team of professional tax auditors. Our auditors excel in a regulatory environment where they have both the responsibility and authority to address issues of tax compliance. They play a vital role in ensuring the tax dollars that fund key programs and services throughout Washington are collected accurately.
In this role, you work with a variety of businesses, their affiliates, and subsidiaries to ensure they understand the applicable tax laws and accurately remit their tax liability to the state. You travel throughout a designated region, meeting with businesses to observe and understand their operations, evaluate their activities and accounting records, and provide education on tax laws and compliance. You formulate efficient audit approaches, conduct research on nexus to Washington sales, determine compliance with tax laws, and prepare audits using advanced Excel functions.
This is a diverse role that allows you to work independently, travel as needed, and receive per diem reimbursement for expenses. You also collaborate with a team, receive training, share ideas, and ensure consistent interpretation and application of law. You may conduct team audits to manage large, complex audits and be exposed to a wide variety of businesses across many sectors.
Training & Advancement Revenue Auditor 2 In‑Training: For those hired in‑training, you will complete a two‑year training plan that includes three weeks of new auditor training classes to build foundational knowledge. You will participate in audit training with senior auditors who will teach auditing standards, processes, and techniques, and provide support as you begin to independently conduct audits. You will also participate in team audits to broaden your audit experience. Upon completing field experience and demonstrating knowledge, you will advance to the professional level.
Qualifications Key knowledge, skills, and competencies required:
Basic understanding of accounting principles, including financial statements, general ledgers, and journal entries.
Experience using Excel functions and formulas to organize, analyze, and summarize data.
Basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Research, Analysis, and Problem Solving:
Ability to apply intermediate analytical skills to collect relevant data and reach conclusions.
Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components, identifying logical outcomes.
Ability to research, interpret, and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting.
Planning and Organization:
Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously, ensuring timely completion.
Ability to evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization, priority, and methods to meet deadlines.
Communication (Written and Verbal):
Ability to convey complex information in layman’s terms to generate understanding and reach agreement.
Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives professionally.
Experience communicating effectively and professionally in both verbal and written form.
Experience composing written communication that effectively conveys ideas or information to the intended reader.
Adaptability:
Openness toward changing ideas, responsibilities, strategies, and processes.
Experience working with a high degree of autonomy while participating collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred qualifications may include:
Demonstrated professional experience in the required competencies.
Four or more years of professional experience in accounting, auditing, tax compliance, or tax administration.
A bachelor’s degree in accounting.
24 semester or 36 quarter hours of college‑level accounting.
