$37,621.00/yr - $54,078.00/yr Bonus and incentives
All hires are eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Additionally, positions are eligible for an employee referral bonus program ($1,000). Description and work context
We recruit for Correctional Officer I, II, and III levels statewide within the agency. The Division of Institutions is responsible for the care and custody of inmates across North Carolina, with custody levels including Minimum, Medium, and Close. This role involves supervising offenders and maintaining safety and security across facilities. Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders. Tour assigned areas and observe offender activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors. Identify offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems to implement appropriate safety and security measures. Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff. Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband. Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement. Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information. Escort offenders within and outside the institution. Use and maintain keys and other equipment. Supervise offender work details. Specific security duties vary by post-assignment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
Management Preference: Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form. Required qualifications
Some NC prisons contain more than one custody level of offenders. There may not be a current vacancy at all facilities. Offenders are assigned to various custody levels including Minimum, Medium, and Close, which identifies the level of supervision required. Each Correctional Officer level corresponds with the custody level of offenders supervised. Applicant must have an active Driver's License. When choosing county of residence or desired location, refer to the Facilities Map. Minimum Education and Experience
Correctional Officer I: High School diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience. Correctional Officer II: High School diploma or GED and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Correctional Officer III: High School diploma or GED and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission. Work schedule
This is a full-time position. Employees must be able to work any shift, including rotating, fixed, or split shifts. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required. Appearance and compliance
