About the Department The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (DAC) safeguards and supervises the well‑being of over 19,000 employees and manages the care, custody, and supervision of more than 30,000 adults housed in 53 prison facilities. DAC’s mission is to preserve the safety and security of the public by preventing, protecting, and providing care for all incarcerated individuals.
Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas, including climbing stairs, monitoring behavior and using closed‑circuit cameras.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment, and supervise offender work details.
Qualifications
Active driver’s license.
Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
Experience as a Correctional Officer:
Correctional Officer I: none required
Correctional Officer II: 1 year of experience and a high school diploma/GED or equivalent
Correctional Officer III: 2 years of experience and a high school diploma/GED or equivalent
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Veteran and Other Preferences
Veteran’s Preference – attach DD‑214.
National Guard Preference – attach NGB 23A (RPAS) if a current member or DD‑256 / NGB 22 if a former member.
College credit hours – attach unofficial transcript.
NC Dept. of Justice – Criminal Justice Standards Division – reference specific certification requirements.
