SUMMARY: To assist in providing safe transportation of students to and from designated locations.

Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Follows instructions from the school bus driver pertaining to daily procedures and help as needed.

Assists in the loading and unloading of passengers as directed by the driver. This may involve leaving the bus to operate the lift and/or staying on the bus to secure or release wheelchairs.

Securing wheelchairs properly to meet safety standards and checking security of all straps and wheelchair trays.

Checking on riders and watching them during transport.

Assisting in putting preschoolers in booster seats and ensuring they are properly secured.

Assisting in the supervision of students at bus stops, before departing school, and while traveling to and from school.

Helping with fueling and routine bus maintenance such as checking fluids.

Keeping the bus clean inside and outside, including attending to spills and cleaning body fluids as necessary.

Participating in in‑service programs related to district policies and procedures, first aid, safety, emergency procedures and other subjects.

Assisting the driver in backing the bus or turning the bus around as needed.

Performing related and other duties as assigned that are a logical part of this position.

Maintaining a professional appearance.

Ensuring regular and prompt attendance.

Effectively completing regular and other job performance criteria as assigned.

Promoting good public relations for the school district and community.

Remaining free of any alcohol or non‑prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout employment in the corporation.

Performing such other tasks and assuming such other duties and responsibilities as the superintendent may assign.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Language Skills

Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Communication Skills

Need to be able to work and communicate well with the driver and students. Must be able to discuss situations as they arise on and off the bus. Is polite and courteous to parents and other school personnel.

Knowledge And Abilities

Be willing to work toward obtaining a CDL with appropriate endorsements for the transport of students. Possess a willingness to learn the assigned bus route and operate the two‑way radio as needed.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills And Abilities

Ability to work in a friendly manner with co‑workers and students. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to pass State Skill Test, State Written Test, Department of Transportation physical. Ability to physically manage students and equipment. Be able to observe unusual student behavior and advise supervisor. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently will reach above the head and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp equipment or students. Essentially the employee must be able to drive. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as a student or students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception and peripheral vision. The employee is required to ride a school bus in all types of weather from cold to hot and wet to dry.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud, requiring raised voice levels to be heard.
