This Position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System. MRTs (Coders) are skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in the hospital setting and/or physician‑based settings (physician offices, group practices, multi‑specialty clinics, specialty centers). The Coding practitioners analyze and abstract patients’ health records and assign alpha‑numeric codes for each diagnosis and procedure. Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience: One year of credible experience equivalent to the journey grade level MRT (Coder). Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency: MRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) – and 7407(d). Certification: Persons hired or reassigned to MRT (Coder) positions in the GS‑0675 series in VHA must have either (1) Apprentice/Associate Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC, (2) Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC, or (3) Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS. Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA as an MRT (Coder) on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Duties
Classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings. Select and assign codes from ICD‑10, CPT, and HCPCS. Apply advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures. Perform comprehensive review of electronic health records to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data. Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques, providing written instructions, reference materials, and supplies. Train and provide on‑job instruction to new coders and students. Conform to standards and participate in technical evaluation and validation of health records for compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, and other guidelines. Distribute and balance workload among employees, ensuring timely completion. Analyze and recommend improvements in documentation systems. Review compliance monitors with supervisors, identify training needs, and conduct audits. Provide coding guidance to various levels of staff to promote consistency in practice and compliance with coding rules. Initiate, prepare, and maintain reports; analyze data and present results. Coordinate workflow, budget, and hiring as needed. Ensure audit findings and claim denials related to coding errors are resolved and daily coding rejects corrected. Monitor trends and policy changes affecting coding practices. Develop coding training materials and present curriculum. Senior Level Responsibilities
Provide coding guidance, training, and mentorship to MRTs (Coders). Assume leadership in coding accuracy and timeliness. Assist in performance evaluations, hiring, and workforce development. Physical Requirements
Light lifting (under 15 pounds); moderate carrying (15–44 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; walking (1–4 hours); standing (1–4 hours). Seniority level
