The Opportunity As a nuclear stress engineer on the Mechanical Piping Team, this professional will function as a technical specialist or in a lead role. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead design execution efforts, along with:
Perform, verify, and direct others to perform piping stress analysis to ensure conformance to ASME Section III, ASME B31.1, and associated ASME Standards, as well as both client and jurisdictional requirements for nuclear pressure piping.
Detailed stress analysis of metallic piping, evaluating conditions such as: elevated temperature service, piping loads at sensitive equipment such as steam turbines, pumps, compressors/expanders and air-cooled heat exchangers, pulsating service, flow-induced vibration, and transient loads.
Coordinate work between domestic and international offices. Assign tasks to and coordinate with other internal/external team members on complex projects.
Initiate contact with other disciplines as needed to identify and coordinate details of the work.
Prepare purchase specifications and administer pipe support purchase order contracts with domestic and international suppliers.
Preparation and qualification of pipe support designs satisfying all code and project requirements.
Actively seek to understand client interests and drivers through normal client contact and through interaction and communication with project leadership.
Expand knowledge in other disciplines and/or functional areas and provide mentoring and training to junior engineers.
Travel to job sites for walkdowns and hanger inspections for both existing and new-build facilities.
The Team The Mechanical Engineering Department is a global team that delivers high quality, on time design and services projects in the areas of Power, Gas, Fuels & Chemicals, Water and Waste Water, Data Centers, and Mining including everything Mechanically related to Process and Power (from Conventional, Combined Heat and Power, Hydro, Hydrogen, Nuclear, Solar/Renewable, LNG, Ammonia, Fertilizer) projects to specialized Air Quality Control, HVAC, Fire Protection, Piping, Thermal and Renewable performance estimating and testing.
The Mechanical Piping design team at Black & Veatch specializes in piping design and stress analysis for mechanical systems. They are experts in detailed analysis of various piping materials, with a focus on addressing complex design challenges and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The U.S. based group has a staff of 30 professionals located in several locations around the country, primarily in Raleigh, NC and the world headquarters in Overland Park, KS.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience relevant to nuclear pipe stress analysis and piping design.
Technical depth the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code, as well as using engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards related to piping design.
Working knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III-1 NB (Class 1), NCD (Class 2 & Class 3), and NF (Supports), and ASME NQA-1.
Intermediate knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III, Division 5 (High Temperature Reactors).
Intermediate knowledge of other design standards and specifications such as API, ASTM, and AWWA.
Working knowledge of AutoPIPE stress analysis software.
Intermediate knowledge of ANSYS Mechanical and basic FEA principles.
Intermediate knowledge of other disciplines, industry and technology trends, company quality program, principles of construction and constructability practices, and procurement and contract administration.
Working knowledge of processes and procedures for project controls and estimating.
Advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 5 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Certifications
Professional Engineer (P.E.) preferred, or in active pursuit of such licensure
Work Environment and Schedule
This position would require working in a typical office environment. The position may entail prolonged periods of sitting and computer use, and the professional would ideally be able to maintain focus and attention to detail throughout the workday. The position may also be require physical tasks during site visits, including crouching, grasping, and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
