Job Summary
Serves as a member of the six‑person Mission: Iconic Reefs (MIR) Field Team based in the Florida Keys. The Research Coordinator II supports the day‑to‑day activities associated with the MIR monitoring program, including restoration monitoring, benthic and fish surveys, sensor installation and data archiving, and is responsible for developing monitoring protocols, drafting reports, and collaborating with partners. The role also involves field support, vessel operations, data management, and emergency preparedness.
Responsibilities
Support MIR research monitoring, stewardship, and maintenance activities at all seven iconic reef sites and other reef restoration activities. Coordinate ground‑truthing, stake installation, photogrammetry, coral health assessment, fish assemblage monitoring, night dives, and sensor deployment. Process, archive, and analyze image data; synthesize findings and draft periodic and annual monitoring reports. Assist in writing and reviewing funding proposals and represent FIU at meetings and conferences. Develop and recommend updates to research and monitoring protocols and procedures. Organize and transport materials and equipment to work sites; maintain documentation and logs. Operate sanctuary vessels and maintain local water knowledge. Perform administrative tasks such as email correspondence, timesheets, and evaluations. Provide technical and logistical support for scientific research, permitting, and ecosystem monitoring. Collect and maintain documentation of algal growth, corallivores, retention rates, and coral disease. Maintain buoy systems and conduct routine maintenance and cleaning. Assist with research permit reviews and support the FKNMS Restoration Blueprint and Management Plan. Serve as Chief or Co‑Chief Scientist on research cruises as needed. Respond to emergency situations such as hurricanes or university emergency closings.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and at least three (3) years of experience.
Departmental Requirements
SCUBA diving certification. Rescue Diver SCUBA certification from a nationally recognized agency or military. Seventy‑five (75) logged open‑water dives.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with boat‑based scientific field operations, including operation of small vessels and trailers. Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, SQL, R, and photo‑analysis software such as NHLC CPCe. Knowledge of local waters, marine equipment, and facilities operations. Divemaster SCUBA certification, AAUS dive certification, and Nitrox dive certification. Familiarity with monitoring techniques and identification of marine flora and fauna of Florida’s coral reef.
Work Schedule
Begin time: 8:30 AM – End time: 5:00 PM.
Working Conditions
Boating / water craft. Overnight or extended travel. Ability to lift heavy equipment.

Other Information
Ability to travel locally and nationally. Ability to work flexible hours as needed. Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays. Position funded by an external source (e.g., a grant or contract).
