Lead Medical Technologist – Wellstar Health System

Job Summary Under the general supervision of a Supervisor, Manager or Director, performs clinical laboratory testing pursuant to established protocols requiring independent judgment and responsibility; maintains equipment, records, performs quality assurance, and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. Accuracy, critical thinking, job knowledge, productivity, communication, and other duties are required.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Performs responsibilities of a medical technologist: work independently analyzing blood and body fluids for ordered diagnostic tests in general laboratory, blood bank, or microbiology sections, adhering to established procedures.
Performs routine testing in hematology, manual hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, processing, chemistry, manual chemistry, blood bank, microbiology as requested.
Performs lab supplementary tasks for quality control and logs required activities.
Communicates results to appropriate personnel and participates in shift‑to‑shift hand‑off communication.
Acts as a resource to pathologists, resolves issues, serves as a technical resource to other technologists, trains technologists, and acts as a consultant to supervisors.
Special duties: maintenance of key instruments, maintain procedure manuals, reagent logs, QC reports, order supplies, inventory management.
Performs linearity studies, correlation studies, evaluates new tests, and performs CAP surveys.
Blood bank duties if required: participate in bench rotation, run automated blood bank instrument, perform stat duties, order/supply blood products.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Health Science
Required Certifications
MT(ASCP) or MT(AAB) or MT(AMT) or MLS(ASCP) or MT(HEW) or MLS(AMT)
Additional Licenses/Certifications
Category C, H, M, BB, MB based on facility need; required upon hire.
Required Minimum Experience
Minimum 3 years as a Medical Technologist with 1 year blood bank experience if applicable.
Epic experience preferred.
Computer/data entry experience required.
Required Minimum Skills
Communication with healthcare team.
Proficient with Excel and Word, basic computer operational knowledge.
