Summary The Audiologist conducts a full range of audiological evaluations to determine the type and degree of hearing loss, evaluates patients' needs for amplification, predicts and measures the effectiveness of amplification, and provides aural rehabilitation and counseling to Veterans with hearing loss and their families.

Duties

Assess the nature, type, and severity of hearing, communication, and vestibular disorders

Identify and evaluate individuals with hearing disorders in reception and perception of speech, language, and other acoustic signals.

Administer the full range of tests to determine type and degree of hearing loss and provide expert opinion regarding etiology of auditory dysfunctions.

Recommend remedial measures to mitigate hearing loss

Direct services of a remedial and preventative nature, including selection, evaluation, and fitting of hearing aids, assistive listening devices, and accessories.

Issue hearing protection and coordinate auditory rehabilitation and tinnitus programs for patients.

Design patient-centered treatment plans to maximize physical and social functioning.

Develop and conduct comprehensive hearing conservation programs for employees at risk for noise exposure.

Counsel patients and family members regarding management of hearing, communication, and vestibular disorders

Provide patient educational resources and serve as a consultant to other healthcare providers for complex cases.

Provide professional advice and consultation in audiology to other health care professionals

Serve as a subject matter expert on hearing, tinnitus, and balance disorders.

Assist in assignment of staff audiologists to VHA programs and settings.

Independently apply contemporary audiology treatments to a full range of patient populations

Apply clinical skills in hearing conservation, electrophysiological assessment, central auditory function assessment and treatment, tinnitus counseling, and advanced amplification technology.

Utilize knowledge of embryology, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, and the effects of high intensity noise on the auditory mechanism.

Work Schedule Full-time; Monday‑Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Compressed tour may be offered.

Conditions of Employment

Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Selective Service registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Proficient in written and spoken English.

Subject to background/security investigation.

Complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification documents.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.

Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination.

Qualifications – Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship or, when unavoidable, be able to meet VA Policy on non‑citizen appointments.

Doctor of Audiology (AUD) from an ACAE‑ or CAA‑accredited audiology program or an equivalent doctoral degree in hearing science or a related field.

Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice audiology at the doctoral level in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or D.C.

Proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determinations GS‑11 Audiologist Education: None beyond the basic requirements. Additional KSAs: Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders; ability to perform functions in contemporary audiology; patient and professional interaction skills.

GS‑12 Audiologist Experience: At least one year of professional experience comparable to GS‑11. Additional KSAs: Skill in determining nature, type, and severity of hearing disorders; counseling skills; providing professional advice and consultation; independent application of contemporary audiology treatments.

Preferred Experience

Previous experience within the VA.

Experience in audiologic evaluations, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, advanced technology referrals (e.g., cochlear implants), and working with audiology technicians.

Experience counseling patients, family members, or support personnel on hearing loss.

Physical Requirements Participation in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation may be required. Incumbent will be required to complete a driving physical.
