Primary Purpose of Position The 4‑H Extension Agent is a professional educator responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating effective and comprehensive 4‑H programs that meet county needs and support the mission of 4‑H. The Agent cooperates with NC State Extension colleagues and county leaders to deliver research‑based, non‑formal, hands‑on educational experiences. The Agent will lead all 4‑H programming, determine needs, market activities, implement activities, evaluate outcomes, train 4‑H volunteers, support 4‑H clubs, and expand school‑based 4‑H programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Direct and grow a comprehensive 4‑H professional youth development program for ages 5–18.
Supervise a Juntos Program Coordinator and a 4‑H Program Assistant.
Ensure positive youth development principles are integrated across all programs.
Build relationships with community partners to recruit, train, manage, and reward volunteer leaders.
Manage a county‑wide advisory council to identify programmatic needs and champion 4‑H.
Develop a marketing program to attract youth and volunteers across the county.
Evaluate program effectiveness and report results.
Maintain accurate records of youth and volunteer leaders and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Respond promptly to client requests for technical information on youth education.
Work with youth organizations and schools to promote enrichment programs.
Other Work/Responsibilities
Be self‑directed and possess strong leadership, communication, and public relations skills.
Possess the ability to travel and work after‑hours and weekends as needed.
Be flexible to allow for changing responsibilities.
Maintain a valid NC driver’s license and a good driving record.
Requirements and Preferences Work Schedule:
8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with flexibility and occasional evenings and weekends.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Bachelor’s degree in child or youth development, or related field, GPA ≥ 2.5 overall (≥ 3.0 for child or youth development). GPA waivable for NCCE Program Associates.
Or at least 1/2 of a master’s degree in the same field with GPA ≥ 3.0.
Or a master’s degree in child or youth development or related field.
Department‑Required Skills:
Independent work, interaction with broad populations, recruitment, and supervision of volunteer leaders.
Computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Office).
Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.
Ability to travel and work after‑hours and weekends as needed.
Knowledge of community partners and the ability to maintain relationships.
Physical ability to lift and carry training supplies and equipment.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training, Education:
Experience as a team member and in program, financial, and human resources management.
Knowledge in mass media, marketing, and presentations.
Leadership, citizenship, budget management, planning, and public relations skills.
Knowledge of the local Durham community and resources.
Experience building community partnerships.
Experience supervising employees and volunteers.
Experience working with a bilingual (Spanish) community and/or bilingual skills.
Relevant Points to Consider:
Position requires night and weekend work; professional scheduling available.
Key responsibility is volunteer management and fundraising for the county 4‑H program.
Candidate must have a good driving record for youth transportation.
Background check by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for positions working with children.
Required License or Certification:
Valid NC driver’s license required.
Commercial driver’s license not required.
Recruitment Anticipated Hiring Range:
Minimum student salary: $40,000; Minimum master’s salary: $45,000; Minimum doctoral salary: $50,000 (plus a $6,000 supervisory stipend).
