Gardener – Urban Forestry - Public Works (3417 TEX) Role: Gardener – Urban Forestry, Public Works (Temporary Exempt). Hours: Full-time. Salary range: $78,884.00 - $95,992.00 Annually. This position is with the Bureau of Urban Forestry in San Francisco Public Works.

Overview The Bureau of Urban Forestry (BUF) oversees median maintenance, tree planting, and the healthy maintenance of city-owned trees, and its crews repair sidewalks and build curb ramps to advance safety and accessibility. Public Works has multiple vacancies for Gardener (3417) positions within the Landscaping division. This role is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and serves at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The position may be filled in this or other divisions.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, perform routine maintenance and landscaping renovation tasks to care for athletic fields, squares, parks, playgrounds, stadiums, thoroughfares, medians and/or other landscaped areas.

Prepare soil by rototilling, spading and fertilizing; maintain plants by planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating and pruning.

Identify a large variety of plant materials and their cultural requirements; identify pests and diseases and apply IPM techniques to control or mitigate pests and diseases.

Maintain lawns by raking, edging, mowing, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, and overseeding; clear brush and debris; sweep and rake areas; clean litter; clear drains; change sprinkler heads when required.

Operate and perform routine maintenance on gardening equipment and tools; use mowers, watering equipment, gopher traps, and related equipment.

May be assigned to work with and/or direct the work of volunteers.

Working Conditions The work may involve exposure to inclement weather and hazardous conditions/materials (e.g., feces, urine, used syringes). All positions require driving. Some roles may require riding mowers and operating small utility vehicles and working in public spaces such as parks and trails. Weekend or shift work may be required.

Special Requirements Ability to lift, drag and/or move large and/or heavy plants and equipment to truck bed level with assistance; kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods safely. Probationary period will evaluate these abilities.

How to qualify Experience Minimum Qualifications:

Three (3) years of verified experience in care, construction, or maintenance of landscaped areas by planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and pest control in sports/athletic fields, golf courses, parks, gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens or public landscapes.

OR possession of a Certificate of Achievement in horticulture/landscaping/gardening or related field and two (2) years of verifiable experience.

OR an Associate degree in horticulture/landscaping/gardening or related field and eighteen (18) months of verifiable experience.

OR completion of 3,000 hours of the City and County of San Francisco gardener apprenticeship program.

License Requires possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Notes One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours. Overtime is not included in that calculation. Valid driver’s license with no restrictions is required to perform essential duties.
