Clinical Pharmacy Specialist, Infectious Diseases

Overview This position functions as the pharmacy expert on the Infectious Diseases team with a primary focus on supporting the OPAT program. The role will play a key part in expanding OPAT services to include transplant ID patients and in developing the CoPAT service to optimize care for individuals receiving complex IV and oral antimicrobial therapies. While the main emphasis will be on OPAT and ambulatory stewardship, there will also be opportunities to participate in inpatient ID consult rounds and to precept pharmacy residents and/or students, offering a well-rounded clinical experience.
Responsibilities
Manage clinical activities, priorities, and problems; oversee pharmacist staffing and workloads; communicate status to pharmacy management and key stakeholders.
Develop clinical initiatives, identify therapeutic alternatives when drug shortages arise, and communicate with medical staff leadership.
Assist with budget preparation and daily financial activity related to high-cost drugs.
Support the Director and Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy in meeting administrative goals and objectives.
Participate in OPAT and ambulatory stewardship activities; contribute to inpatient ID consult rounds as opportunities arise.
Precept pharmacy residents and/or students; contribute to education and training within the department.
Promote pharmacy services, participate in multidisciplinary in-services/meetings, publish articles or drug information, and maintain visibility in daily activities.
Engage in formulary management, cost-saving initiatives, and assessment of cost-effective pharmaceuticals; prepare monographs for formulary discussions.
Ensure compliance with policies and procedures; participate in performance improvement activities and ensure patient safety through monitoring and interventions.
Mentor clinical staff pharmacists and support personnel; represent Pharmacy Department at P&T Committee and Service Line Meetings.
Accurately perform computer order entry, update medication profiles, review orders for therapeutic appropriateness, and document interventions.
Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to orientation and training of new staff.
Perform duties in line with organizational policies, including core functions that involve direct patient care and handling of sensitive information.
Foster teamwork, maintain professionalism, adapt to changes, and support hospital resources and financial stewardship.
Adhere to safety, infection control, and corporate compliance policies; maintain patient confidentiality and respectful engagement with all customers.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education : PGY1 and PGY2 from an ASHP-accredited residency program; PGY1 with 5 years progressive clinical practice, or a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an ACPE-accredited school, with appropriate post-graduate experience.
Experience : 5 years progressive clinical practice in a specialty with PGY1 ASHP residency, or 8 years progressive clinical practice in a specialty.
Licenses/Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS); eligible for licensure by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP); appropriate inpatient ACLS/advanced life support credentials as required; Texas licensure within 30 days of hire.
Computer skills and data-entry experience; strong English communication skills (speaking, reading, writing).
Good health and stress-coping ability; ability to perform moderate physical effort as needed.
