Job Description
Summary: This is a
highly skilled supervisory and technical position
focused on reviewing, analyzing, and approving or rejecting building construction plans for compliance with the
Florida Building Code ,
Miami-Dade County Code , and related laws and regulations. The role involves both
office-based plans examination
and
field inspections , as well as potential supervision of Building Inspectors and acting as Chief Inspector in their absence. Key Responsibilities:
Review and analyze construction documents including: Blueprints, tracings, sketches, and permit applications Structural and architectural plans for new buildings, remodels, and repairs Approve or disapprove plans based on code compliance; advise stakeholders on necessary revisions. Conduct field inspections for new construction, renovations, and condemned properties to ensure permit possession and code compliance. Supervise and assist inspectors; review reports and assign inspections as needed. Enforce local and state codes, including FEMA regulations and roofing protocols. Interpret complex building codes and ordinances; provide guidance to contractors, engineers, architects, and the general public. Respond to walk-in and drop-off plan inquiries and assist with code interpretation and procedural questions. Maintain thorough and accurate records of plan reviews, inspections, and enforcement actions. May function as the
Chief Inspector
when designated by leadership. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements:
Must meet qualifications as both a
Building Inspector
and
Building Plans Examiner
under: Miami-Dade County Code Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Florida Statutes Certification by the
Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals
required within one year of appointment. Valid
Florida Class E Driver’s License
must be obtained before appointment and maintained throughout employment. May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays based on departmental needs. Skills & Abilities:
Thorough understanding of: Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade County Code General and structural construction methods Roofing systems and building envelope integrity Building defect recognition and correction procedures Skilled in evaluating construction plans quickly and accurately under deadline pressure. Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with contractors, architects, engineers, and the public. Ability to lead and supervise others, manage inspection assignments, and uphold high team morale. Capable of preparing detailed inspection records and technical reports. Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Primarily office-based; occasional outdoor work for site inspections and supervision. Requires use of computers, technical tools, and field equipment. Frequently involves sitting, standing, climbing, talking, and hearing. Must occasionally lift up to 14 lbs and work in high temperatures or on uneven surfaces.
