Position Description The faculty of the Department of Anthropology, in conjunction with the Linguistics Program at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invite applications for a 9‑month, full‑time, tenure‑track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 16, 2026. Specifically, we seek applicants who specialize in linguistic anthropology. The Department of Anthropology will be the tenure home for this position, with teaching assignments serving both the Department of Anthropology and the Linguistics Program.

The successful candidate must have and maintain an active and productive program of research that may include public scholarship in addition to demonstrating the potential for securing extramural funding. They must be dynamic educators willing to teach large introductory undergraduate courses, upper‑division and graduate courses in their area(s) of specialization. A typical teaching load in the Department of Anthropology is two courses per semester. They will also be expected to mentor graduate students in both anthropology and linguistics and participate in the administrative life of the department, the college, and the university.

Required Education and Experience

Applicants must hold a PhD in Anthropology, Linguistics or a closely related field by the time of the start date.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience grounded in ethnographic, collaborative, and community‑based approaches to research, with a commitment to social justice.

Theoretical and methodological approaches to language study that are innovative and synergistic with existing faculty expertise.

Geographic area, research focus, and language(s) of specialization are open.
