Overview The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Yale University seeks to hire a Laboratory Manager to oversee the high‑pressure experimental and spectroscopic facilities in the Earth Materials Characterization Center (EMC2). The successful candidate will manage day‑to‑day operations, provide training and support to users, and ensure the safe and effective use of advanced instrumentation for experimental petrology and mineral physics.

Responsibilities

Manages and trains graduate students, postdocs, and other researchers within the lab.

Manages the daily operations of the lab.

Investigates, analyzes and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning.

Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results and maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers to research protocols and published reports.

Performs independent research on laboratory techniques and participates in research planning.

Interacts with internal contacts, including the PI, research assistants, and graduate students to discuss research results and to ensure smooth and safe operations of the lab. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions to compare and consult on research methods to keep abreast of product information and developments.

Operates, maintains, and calibrates all high‑pressure and spectroscopic instrumentation.

Oversee laboratory maintenance, including preventive upkeep and troubleshooting of all systems.

Assist users in experimental design, sample preparation, and data collection.

Schedules facility use and manages access for internal and external researchers.

Ensures compliance with safety protocols and Yale’s laboratory policies.

Manages service, repairs, and upgrades with vendors and technical staff.

Contributes to the development of new experimental techniques and methods.

Support collaborative research projects and, where appropriate, contribute to publications.

May perform other duties as assigned.

1000‑ton Kawai‑type multi‑anvil press

Two end‑loaded piston‑cylinder presses

Gas‑mixing furnaces for controlled atmosphere experiments

Raman spectrometer

FTIR spectrometer

Required Skills and Abilities

Ph.D. in Earth sciences, materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field, with strong background in experimental petrology or mineral physics (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

Demonstrated experience with high‑pressure, high‑temperature experimental techniques (multi‑anvil or piston‑cylinder preferred)

Experience with Raman and FTIR spectroscopy strongly desired

Proven ability to manage complex laboratory instrumentation and infrastructure

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills for training and working with a diverse user community

Commitment to laboratory safety and best practices
