Job Overview
We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well‑integrated team. This post provides an unparalleled opportunity for a trainee with an interest in PIC medicine to gain knowledge in all aspects of paediatric intensive care. The post includes 6 months on Cardiac PICU at Freeman Hospital (ECMO, mechanical support, heart failure, transplantation) and 6 months on PICU at Great North Children’s Hospital (paediatric immunology, bone marrow transplant, renal transplant, trauma, respiratory). The post is suitable for a paediatric trainee or an anaesthetic trainee interested in paediatric intensive care or paediatric anaesthesia. Consultants support trainees fully, and responsibility depends on experience. Research and service development opportunities are available. Successful applicant requires GMC registration prior to taking up the post.

This Fellowship Programme is designed to provide experience in Paediatric Intensive Care and the transport of critically ill children. It is suitable for clinicians seeking to enhance paediatric critical care skills and knowledge to complement their chosen career path, as well as preparing applicants for a career in PICM.

Clinical responsibilities
Attendance at and contribution to daily ward rounds/handovers
Assessment, admission and management of critically ill children
Lead resuscitations and emergency care
Post‑operative management of neurosurgical, orthopaedic, ENT, general surgical patients, bone marrow and kidney transplant recipients
Participation in North East Children’s Transport and Retrieval (NECTAR) rota
Research
The appointee will be encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical studies and research projects under the supervision of the consultants in intensive care.
Teaching
The post offers comprehensive training in paediatric intensive care including resuscitation, stabilisation and transport of the critically ill child. Formal teaching sessions, informal bedside teaching, journal clubs, and simulation training are provided.
Job Purpose and Experience
Primary medical qualification, full GMC registration, 2 years of specialist registrar experience in an acute speciality (paediatrics, anaesthesia, emergency medicine, or paediatric surgery) are required.
Desirable criteria
Experience in critical care (neonatal or paediatric intensive care unit or adult ICU)
Experience in paediatric anaesthesia
APLS provider or equivalent
Technical skills – airway management, intubation, ultrasound‑guided line insertion
Evidence of audit projects and leadership experience
IT literacy
