Trust Fellow in Congenital Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (ST6+)
Freeman Hospital, part of Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, invites applications for a Trust Fellow in Congenital Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia (ST6+). The post is available as soon as possible for 12 months and will lead to a 12‑month fellowship (ST6/7, post‑CCT or equivalent) in paediatric and adult congenital cardiac anaesthesia, including cardiopulmonary transplantation, ECMO, mechanical circulatory support and paediatric thoracic anaesthesia. Fellows will also participate in the cardiac PICU on‑call rota.
Job Overview Eligible candidates will gain broad experience across all areas of paediatric and adult congenital cardiac anaesthesia, teaching, education, research and audit. The role offers flexible working arrangements to support patient care and the fellow’s career development.
Responsibilities
Pre‑operative assessment and provision of congenital cardiac anaesthesia for cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac catheterisation procedures under direct or local supervision.
On‑call duty for paediatric cardiothoracic intensive care as part of an approximately 8‑person full‑shift system.
Participation in teaching, education, audit and research projects, with protected time to develop a minimum of one publication by the end of the year.
Support for paediatric thoracic work, including bronchoscopy, decortication, lobectomy/pneumonectomy, and anaesthesia for CT/MR studies.
Provide post‑operative pain relief techniques applicable to paediatric cardiothoracic surgery.
Qualifications
Primary Medical Qualification and full GMC registration.
Previous experience in at least two of the following: general paediatric anaesthesia, adult cardiac anaesthesia, paediatric intensive care, paediatric cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
Desirable: Advanced training (Special Interest Area, post‑CCT fellowship or equivalent) in at least one of the above areas.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Strong history, examination and diagnostic skills with the ability to order appropriate investigations.
Proficiency with cardiac imaging and management of congenital heart disease in children and adults.
Experience in anaesthesia for cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced cardiac ICU care.
Teaching, Governance, and Research
Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students and foundation doctors.
Experience of audit projects and at least one recent research contribution.
