Job Description
Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Department: Operations
Division: 7
Report to: Road Maintenance Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Location: Multiple
Basic Purpose: Operate power equipment and perform related tasks in maintenance and repair of highways.
Typical Functions
- Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, cranes, backhoes, etc.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
- Repair roadway shoulders or bridge decks, and replace signs, posts, guardrails, and fences.
- Provide traffic control assistance using flags or stop/slow signs.
- Apply herbicide to highway rights-of-way to control weeds.
- Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, and spilled items.
Level I Responsibilities
Basic level, under close supervision, operating and maintaining power equipment and performing unskilled or semi-skilled tasks.
Level II Responsibilities
Skilled work at full performance level for heavy equipment, routine highway maintenance, and traffic control.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery.
- Manual labor capability and ability to follow instructions.
- For Level II: Knowledge of operation and servicing of equipment, proper highway traffic control, and communication skills.
Education and Experience
- Level I: None required.
- Level II: One year of experience operating heavy equipment.
Special Requirements
- Valid Oklahoma driver’s license; optionally a commercial driver’s license class A or B.
- Must pass a drug test and physical abilities demonstration.
- Willingness to work hours other than regular shifts, travel, and on‑call duties.
- Ability to lift 80–100 pounds.
- Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
