Job Description

  • Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
  • Department: Operations
  • Division: 2
  • Report to: Road Maintenance Supervisor
  • FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt
  • Location: 194286 US 271, Antlers, OK 74523
  • Prerequisites: Pre‑employment background check and drug screening before starting; Physical Abilities Demonstration may be required; Must be rated as capable of performing the job functions.
  • Basic Purpose: Operate power equipment and perform maintenance and repair of highways.
  • Typical Functions: Operate heavy machinery such as tractors, graders, bulldozers, loaders, cranes, backhoes, semi‑trailers, snow removal equipment; perform minor repairs and maintenance; repair roadway shoulders or bridge decks; repair or replace signs, posts, guardrails, fences; provide traffic control using stop/slow signs or flags; apply herbicide; remove debris including tires, animal carcasses, spilled items.

Level I

  • Basic level under close supervision, operating and maintaining equipment and performing unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Safe operation of heavy machinery; manual labor; maintenance and operation of power equipment; following instructions.
  • Education: None required.

Level II

  • Full performance level of operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or repair; performs routine maintenance duties.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Operation and servicing of heavy equipment; knowledge of materials; proper traffic control during maintenance; operating heavy equipment; using materials; following instructions; effective communication.
  • Education and Experience: One year operating heavy equipment experience.
  • Special Requirements: Valid Oklahoma driver’s license; may require a commercial driver’s license class A or B with appropriate endorsements; CDL tank vehicle endorsement for ODOT employees; pass drug test; willingness to travel, work irregular hours, and be on call; must stand, walk, reach, and lift 80–100 lbs; meet vision and other physical standards.
