Job Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) – POCT performs chemical analyses of specimens to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. This role compiles data from routine to complex medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. The MLS performs assigned tasks for all patient populations and works within one or more designated departments including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/Immunology/Serology, Stat Laboratory, and/or Point of Care Testing (POCT).

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

Serves as the POCT technical expert and information resource for the John Peter Smith Health Network. Participates in selection of test methodology appropriate for the clinical use of test results, ensuring all activities meet or exceed regulatory standards.

Collaborates with district laboratory POC resources to establish best practices.

Investigates and evaluates all instances of non‑compliance.

Conducts ongoing training sessions for point‑of‑care testing personnel and testing site administrators as needed.

Performs moderate/high complexity tests authorized by the laboratory supervisor, manager, or director and reviews testing performance as applicable.

Participates in maintaining records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; manages performance improvement activities and mandatory continuing education.

Adheres to and understands laboratory quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, including deviations, calibrations, and maintenance performed.

Follows guidelines to troubleshoot/correct assay problems or instrument malfunctions, performing maintenance and working with supervisor/manager on troubleshooting QC or instrument issues.

Participates in training and orientation of new employees and students, providing technical guidance.

Attends continuing education programs sponsored by JPS, manufacturer in‑services, and/or professional society programs. Uses department computer systems appropriately, including order/reports/charging, and maintains professionalism in communication.

Performs extra projects as requested and approved by supervisor.

Complies with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements for health‑care delivery.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.

Documented evidence that CLIA ’88 qualifications are met.

Must have one of the following certifications through ASCP or AMT:

Medical Technologist (MT)

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Certified Laboratory Scientist (CLS)

Specialty certification within a related discipline

Minimum two years of experience working as an MLS.

Preferred Qualifications

Training in advanced laboratory analyzer operation and maintenance, and POCT.
