Job Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs chemical analyses of specimens to determine the presence of normal and abnormal components. The MLS compiles data from routine to complex medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease and works within designated departments including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/Immunology/Serology, Stat Laboratory, and/or Transfusion Services.

Essential Job Functions & Accountabilities

Conduct routine to complex laboratory tests and analyses of patient specimens for diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Determine the acceptability of patient samples and prepare samples in accordance with industry standard methods.

Perform calibration and preventive maintenance procedures and verify acceptability of Quality Control values.

Prepare slides and add reagents or indicator solutions for microscopic analysis.

Analyze patient samples and evaluate test result reliability according to age, gender, and specimen criteria before releasing information for patient care.

Execute LIS/HIS computer functions involved in pre‑analytic, analytic, and post‑analytic processes.

Troubleshoot and conduct preventive maintenance on equipment; report concerns as necessary.

Comply with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements related to health care delivery.

Participate in proficiency surveys, performance improvement activities, and mandatory continuing education programs.

Provide technical guidance, training, and orientation to new employees and students.

Perform special collection procedures, develop procedures, and maintain inventory and records as assigned or required.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from an accredited college or university.

Documented evidence meeting Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA ’88) criteria.

Must obtain one of the following certifications within 1 year of employment: Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Certified Laboratory Scientist (CLS), or specialty certification within a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

1+ year of experience performing a variety of routine to complex laboratory analysis.
