Job Summary The Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) provides technical leadership and performs laboratory tests and analyses of patient specimens across multiple scientific disciplines (chemistry, hematology, microbiology/immunology/serology, stat laboratory, and transfusion services) to support patient diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

Provides direct technical oversight of laboratory testing personnel and ensures compliance with regulatory standards and established policies.

Acts as a resource for technical staff, overseeing orientation, training, and day‑to‑day operations.

Determines acceptability of patient samples, prepares specimens, and analyzes results with consideration of patient demographics and specimen criteria.

Resolves technical, mechanical, and quality control issues and documents all incidents.

Performs routine maintenance, minor instrument repairs, calibration procedures, and quality control verification.

Uses the Laboratory and Hospital Information System (LIS/HIS) to manage pre‑analytic, analytic, and post‑analytic processes.

Participates in proficiency surveys, performance improvement activities, and mandatory continuing education programs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science (or Medical Technology) from an accredited institution.

Documentation that meets Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA ’88) requirements.

Certification as an ASCP or AMT Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Certified Laboratory Scientist (CLS), or specialty certification in a related discipline.

Three or more years of experience working as an MLS.

Preferred Qualifications

Training in advanced laboratory analyzer operations and maintenance.

Location and Hours John Peter Smith Hospital – Evenings, 11:00 AM‑8:30 PM or 3:00 PM‑12:30 AM, Monday‑Thursday.
