Position Summary CMS Energy is seeking a
Civil/Structural Engineer (Engineer IV)
to join our
Project Engineering Department
supporting
Energy Resources (ER)
projects, including renewables, hydro, coal generation, gas generation, and gas compression and storage. This position will focus on providing civil and structural engineering leadership and support for the successful planning, development, and execution of power generation and natural gas infrastructure projects across Michigan.
Key Responsibilities
Provide
engineering leadership
and
technical expertise
for renewable and traditional energy generation projects. Serve as a
lead or support civil/structural engineer
for assigned projects within Energy Resources. Support the
development and execution
of renewable projects (e.g., solar, wind, and battery energy storage). Prepare and review
engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documentation . Coordinate with
multi-disciplinary teams
(electrical, mechanical, and civil) to ensure successful project delivery. Apply
sound engineering judgment
to evaluate and select appropriate design methods, materials, and structural systems. Participate in
design reviews ,
construction support , and
contract administration . Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards including
IBC/MBC, AISC, ACI 318, AWS D1.1, and ASCE 7 . Travel within Michigan as needed to visit
project sites
(energy generation and compression facilities).
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree
in Civil or Structural Engineering from an
ABET-accredited program . Experience
in generation plants, substations, or utilities. Ability to work in
industrial environments
(loud, hot, dusty, or oily conditions). Strong
organizational, analytical, communication, and problem-solving
skills. Capable of climbing stairs/ladders, entering tight spaces, and walking uneven construction terrain. Preferred:
Professional Engineer (PE) license
(not required, but preferred). Experience in
design and contract administration . Proficiency with
structural analysis and design software , such as:
RISA-3D, SAP2000, STAAD, EnerCalc, MathCad, SPMats, SPW911, L-Pile, or equivalent.
Familiarity with
civil/structural design codes
and
industry standards . Prior experience developing
contract documents , including drawings and technical specifications.
Work Environment
This role involves routine
on-site work
at CMS Energy’s Michigan facilities. The position requires adaptability to
changing project priorities
and conditions. Typical projects include
renewable generation (solar, wind, battery)
and
traditional energy assets .
