A highly motivated and experienced Dental Surgeon is sought to provide a clinical sedation service (intravenous and inhalational) and comprehensive dental treatment for patients in the Sedation Department. The post is permanent and will start in January 2026.
Job Overview You will be an experienced Dental Surgeon with an enthusiasm to communicate knowledge and experience to students and patients. You will have been fully registered with the GDC for at least three years and have experience of intravenous and inhalational conscious sedation. You will be offered a structured induction and support with the opportunity for further educational development.
Main duties of the post
Provide a clinical sedation service (intravenous & inhalational) and operative dental treatment for adult and paediatric patients.
Provide assessment and treatment planning for new sedation referrals.
Co‑ordinate and deliver specific components of service and teaching in partnership with clinical and academic colleagues.
Contribute to the organisation and delivery of sedation teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Person specification Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
BDS or equivalent
GDC registerable qualification
Fully registered with the General Dental Council for at least three years
MFDS or equivalent
Postgraduate qualification in Dental Sedation or commitment to undertake the qualification within 18 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
Leadership and training experience
Certificate in teaching or medical education
Clinical experience
At least three years post‑BDS qualification experience in clinical dentistry
Substantial clinical experience in intravenous and inhalational sedation for dentistry
Completed a Foundation Training programme and at least one year in a recognised NHS post as DCT or above
Management and Administration Experience
Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues
Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities
Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to personal development
Desirable criteria (management)
Proven management ability
Teaching
Experience of supervising or training clinical dental trainees, students or DCPs
Desirable criteria (teaching)
Experience in sedation teaching and training
Research / Audit / Clinical Governance
Understanding of Clinical Governance
Understanding of UK guidelines on the practice of dental sedation
Desirable criteria (research)
Successful completion of audit projects that have led to change
