Location:
Department of Correction, Northeast Correctional Complex, Johnson County, TN
Salary:
Hiring Rate $4,267; 6‑month increase to $4,374; 12‑month increase to $4,937; 18‑month increase to $5,060. Sign‑on bonus $5,000 payable over 18 months.
Background Check:
This position requires a criminal background check. Applicants must provide personal information.
Qualifications Education:
High‑school graduation or equivalent.
Willing and able to qualify with, carry and use assigned weapons.
At least 18 years old on date of application.
Citizen of the United States.
Good moral character, as determined by investigation.
Complete a criminal history disclosure form as approved.
Agree to release all records involving criminal history.
Supply fingerprint sample for a criminal history check.
No felony convictions or honorable discharge from the armed forces.
Pass a physical examination by a licensed physician.
Pass a psychological evaluation by a licensed mental health professional.
Submit to and pass a pre‑employment screening test for illegal drug use.
Possess a valid motor‑vehicle operator's license (some positions).
Upon appointment, complete the prescribed course at the Tennessee Correction Academy.
During careers, employees may be assigned to any shift or post. Work preferences are considered, but assignment is not guaranteed.
Responsibilities
Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining, recreation, and work areas; attend to medical, visitation, property, and recreational needs.
Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and security risks.
Check new inmates, assign accommodations, search for contraband, issue clothing, store personal property.
Observe inmate behavior, counsel inmates and families, evaluate hygiene and attitudes, and report to counseling.
Attend staff, disciplinary board, and training meetings (riot control, escape prevention, first aid).
Prepare reports: daily logs, disciplinary logs, job/pay records, inmate counts, requisitions.
Operate equipment: radios, firearms, mace, gates, cameras; may operate motor vehicles.
Ensure safety of residents during daily activities.
Break up fights or dangerous situations by persuasion or force.
Enforce policies and procedures to others.
