Senior Financial Improvement Consultant – Public Sector, Defense BDO USA seeks a consultant to support project delivery for U.S. Defense agencies, providing financial improvement, transformation, and audit support services to enhance the completeness, accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of federal agency financial data and enable an unmodified audit opinion.

Job Summary In this role you will deliver financial audit program strategy, risk‑management and internal‑control support, policy guidance, system updates, FFMIA compliance, and capability modernization, while collaborating closely with engagement teams and client leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Provide day‑to‑day client duties, including audit facilitation, remediation strategy, strategic communications, training, change management, risk management, internal‑control support, policy guidance, and system posting logic updates.

Support management in meeting client project requirements and coordinate with engagement team and client leadership on planning, execution, and status processes.

Deliver professional Federal accounting and auditing solutions: audit response, liaison, walkthroughs, site visits, program strategy, reporting, corrective actions, best‑practice implementation, complex financial issue resolution, training, change management, risk‑assessment documentation, controls testing, accounting & financial-reporting operations, research, compliance assessment, test‑of‑design or operating‑effectiveness reviews, asset reviews, transformation efforts, report development, dashboards, presentations, briefings, and status reports.

Manage priorities, coordinate multiple efforts, report status, attend training, assist recruiting, and perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Business Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a degree in another discipline plus required certifications (CPA, CISA, CGFM, CDFM).

Minimum four (4) years of federal or commercial financial‑management experience; two (2) years of federal or commercial accounting experience preferred.

Experience with OM&S, Inventory & Related Property, or E&DL preferred; audit or SSAE‑18/SOC‑1 support preferred.

Experience with FIAR guidance, GAAP, USSGL, FASAB, SFFAS, CFO Act, FMFIA, FFMIA, ICOFR, GAGAS, OMB Circulars, and DoD financial‑management policies preferred.

Minimum Secret‑level security clearance required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word required; advanced proficiency preferred.

Ability to support project‑related travel, work independently, and collaborate within a team.
