This position serves our partners at both the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH). The MNIT MDA and BAH teams support technology critical to ensuring food supply integrity and safety, livestock health, and supporting a vibrant agricultural economy for Minnesota.
This position exists to guide the Minnesota Dept of Agriculture proactively and holistically through technical modernization and optimization initiatives. The primary focus is Salesforce solutions while also supporting other critical applications that align with future business and technical strategies.
The Application Architect leads the organization to achieve targeted business outcomes related to Salesforce modernization efforts. The focus is on building relationships with business and IT stakeholders, communicating the technical needs of the agency’s IT Modernization efforts, and shaping and guiding the delivery of application architecture services.
The role fits a maker’s mindset, capable of designing and developing Salesforce technical architecture, partnering closely with business partners, vendors, and technical teams to realize the vision of MDA and MNIT’s combined technical strategies. The successful candidate switches context seamlessly from design to solution, from influencing stakeholders to working with engineering teams, to make the future state architecture a reality.
Employees will be required to work onsite at 625 Robert St. N, St. Paul, Minnesota at least 50% of the time, with some opportunity to perform work from a telework location.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in Business, Data, Application, and Technology architecture.
Knowledge of architect standards and conventions such as TOGAF, ISO/IEC, Zachman, Federal Enterprise Architecture, etc.
Experience with Salesforce application development, integration and implementation of enterprise solutions.
Familiarity with major cloud platforms and integration ecosystems, including Salesforce Clouds (Sales, Service, Experience, Marketing, Commerce, and Data Cloud), and public cloud environments such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), to design scalable, secure, and interoperable enterprise solutions.
Experience in developing, implementing, and governing technical architecture standards and guidelines, with a strong understanding of information security practices and tools across the architectural stack to ensure secure and compliant system design.
Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem‑solving.
Master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering or a related field of study; and at least five (5) years of experience designing and implementing scalable Salesforce solutions, including architecture development, integration design, and governance of platform standards and security best practices.
Ten or more years of hands‑on technical or business experience in digital modernization efforts.
Ten or more years of experience in at least three disciplines, such as business, data, solution or technical architecture, application development, middleware, requirements gathering, use case development, information analysis, database management or operations in a multitier environment.
Knowledge of business ecosystems, cloud infrastructure, SaaS, Infrastructure, AWS Cloud environments, SaaS, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Service‑Oriented Architecture (SOA), APIs, Open data, microservices, event‑driven IT, and predictive analytics.
Knowledge of organizations business models, operating models, financial models, cost‑benefit analysis, budgeting and risk management.
Familiarity with data management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, agile and lean methodologies, infrastructure and operations, and EA and ITIL frameworks.
Product or Agile experience including an understanding of the different types of agile principles, methodologies and frameworks, especially those designed to be scaled at the enterprise level.
