Who We Are Founded in 2001, LEARN is a non‑profit network of PreK‑8 elementary schools creating measurable, transformational change in the lives of its students. We currently educate 4,100 students, a majority low‑income, minority student population (88% and 98%, respectively), across 12 campuses in Chicago, Lake County, and Washington D.C.
What You’ll Do The Junior Accountant will support the accounting team with daily financial operations, assisting in maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with company policies and accounting standards. This role is ideal for someone detail‑oriented, eager to learn, and looking to grow their career in accounting and finance. This is not a remote opportunity.
Responsibilities
General Accounting : Assist in preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance; prepare year‑end expense accruals; maintain organized financial documentation; ensure compliance with internal control and accounting policies.
Accounts Payable & Receivable : Process AP/AR transactions; recommend operational efficiencies.
Financial Reporting : Help prepare financial statements and management reports; create CFO weekly report package including AP aging report and bank drafts.
Compliance & Regulatory Reporting : Complete annual 1099 forms; complete Unclaimed Property reporting; support audit requests.
Process Improvement & Systems Support : Assist with implementation of process improvements; research credit card process efficiencies; support conversion to new payment processing systems.
Collaboration & Other Duties : Collaborate with team members across departments and campuses; perform other job‑related functions as assigned by the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting and CFO.
What You’ll Need
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business (preferred).
0–2 years of relevant accounting experience.
Knowledge of accounts payable and non‑profit accounting (preferred).
Strong analytical, technical, and mathematical skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and accounting systems; experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or Raiser’s Edge a plus.
Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Able to prioritize, meet deadlines, analyze data, and recommend solutions within accounting standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Team‑oriented with strong collaboration and relationship‑building abilities.
Demonstrates professionalism, confidentiality, and customer service in all interactions.
