Paraeducator – Mainstream Special Education

Position Hours & Pay This position is 2.5 hours per day at 178 days per year. Pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $24.76 per hour.
Responsibilities
Assist certificated staff with instructional and non‑instructional activities for mainstream special education students, including instructing students individually or in small groups, monitoring and documenting student behavior and progress, and supervising student activities.
Instruct students individually or in small groups to promote understanding of materials presented; provide encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of educational objectives defined by certificated staff.
Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student progress; adjust methods to meet the needs of students with a variety of disabilities; consult concerning remediation or enrichment activities.
Assist certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, assignments, and other records for assessment of student progress; may correct, score or grade papers and assignments according to guidelines.
Supervise student behavior in classrooms, playgrounds, halls, lunch, breaks, bus boarding areas, field trips, and other sites as assigned; correct behaviors and maintain discipline according to established policies.
Assist students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery and provide physical assistance to handicapped students when necessary.
Monitor and refer for first aid when needed; maintain and promote student safety and socialization.
Maintain effective communication with students, staff, parents, and the public regarding student progress and safety.
Prepare, duplicate, collate, and distribute materials; operate office equipment as directed by certificated staff.
Serve on district committees and work teams; model appropriate behavior and uphold confidentiality.
Required Training
Right Response Training within 3‑5 months of hire.
Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and General Paraeducator Certificate per state requirements.
Completion of the state‑mandated Paraeducator Certificate Program (dependent on state funding).
Minimum Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
Meet at least one of the following criteria: Successfully passed the ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.
AA degree or higher.
Earning seventy‑two (72) quarter credits or forty‑eight (48) semester credits at an accredited institution.
Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program.
Licenses & Special Requirements
Fingerprinting and background check for no convictions involving minors.
Compliance with district infection control plan.
Right Response certification; CPR and first aid certification may be required.
Hepatitis‑B immunization required.
