The Prince George's County Fire/Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 3H position, grade H17 in the Apparatus Maintenance Division.
About the Position This is senior level skilled mechanical work in the field of equipment maintenance repair and service, whereby incumbents work on a variety of medium to heavy sized motorized equipment, vehicles, and fire and rescue apparatus. Incumbent will also troubleshoot, diagnose, effect repairs, test, perform preventative maintenance, rebuild and replace parts and components. Work is performed independently under general supervision and is evaluated in terms of adherence to established practices and procedures.
About the Agency The mission of the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is to serve our communities with excellence by providing the highest quality of risk reduction, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and all-hazards response services to enhance the quality of life in Prince George’s County.
Performs the more complex and specialized repair and maintenance assignments and/or may lead/provide technical guidance and training to subordinate staff.
May supervise a small staff of subordinate shop staff.
Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and effects repairs utilizing standard domestic and foreign tools and specialized/computerized diagnostic equipment.
Performs maintenance and repairs on cooling/heating and electrical systems.
Tests repaired items.
Performs preventative maintenance assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent GED.
Three (3) years of experience/training in the mechanical field servicing, repairing and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of medium to heavy types of motorized vehicles, equipment, and fire and rescue apparatus with at least one (1) year performing full performance (journey-level) work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered heavy equipment.
Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license.
An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications Possession of one year experience with fire related diagnostic or shop management systems, preferably but not required in the following:
Automotive Service Excellence Master Certified Heavy Duty Truck Technicians.
Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification
Fire Apparatus/Equipment Repair Background
Pump and Aerial Repair Training
Hydraulic Repair Training
