South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as its next Biology Instructor. This individual will teach college-level courses to advanced high school juniors and seniors in a rigorous residential learning environment. This individual must present and manage challenging instruction that targets mastery of subject matter. We welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in general biology; preferred candidates will be qualified to teach anatomy and physiology, including lab components. Candidates with additional experience/expertise in teaching neuroscience, forensic science, or comparative anatomy are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach AP Biology, which is a two-semester course, comparable to a year-long introductory biology course in a collegiate environment. The candidate will also have opportunities to develop and teach upper-level biology courses based upon their specialty. This is a permanent, full-time (10-month) position in Hartsville, South Carolina, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. The salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience. Review of applications will begin immediately, with a start date no later than 08/02/2025. The significant areas of responsibility for this position include: Develop course content and methodology to achieve demonstrable student achievement in the area of instruction. Maintain appropriate class and/or lab and instruction schedules. Explore, develop, and implement innovative methodology for successful instruction. Work with the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction and/or VP for Academics in developing, setting, and sharing successful instructional methods. Work with students in and out of the classroom and counsel students to increase understanding, comprehension, and effective demonstration of competency in the course(s). Monitor students’ progress, identifying weaknesses and strengths and preparing a program to improve any deficiencies. Support school activities as a learning community by following school guidelines and procedures. Complete GSSM's employee evaluation and faculty growth procedures. All other duties assigned by the Department Chair and/or the Dean of Curriculum and/or the VP for Academics. Minimum and Additional Requirements: Master's degree in biology required and demonstrated successful teaching (10 years sought), preferably teaching advanced students.
Additional Requirements: Excellent communication and motivational skills for high academic results with the target student population. Classroom and student management skills (computer entry, grading, etc.). Instructors are expected to use in-person, virtual, or hybrid modalities to meet the needs of the institution and its students; demonstrated experience in these environments is preferred. Preferred Qualifications: Ph. D. in subject area. Experience with gifted high-school-aged students.
