About Berge Bulk

Berge Bulk is one of the world’s leading dry-bulk shipping companies; but our ambition goes far beyond moving cargo. We’re leading the charge toward a zero-carbon future, driven by innovation, data, and design.

Through our Maritime Marshall Plan, we’re re-engineering what’s possible at sea; from wind-assisted propulsion and AI-enabled voyage optimisation to ammonia-fuelled vessels and onboard carbon-capture systems. Our fleet is already 46 % more carbon-efficient than in 2008, outperforming the IMO 2030 target and setting new standards for responsible shipping.

At the heart of our work is a belief that decarbonisation isn’t just a challenge — it’s the greatest engineering opportunity of our generation. Interns joining our Innovation & Newbuilding team will be part of this global effort: testing ideas, building tools, and shaping how shipping transitions to a cleaner, smarter future.

What You’ll Work On You’ll be part of a hands-on team working on live innovation projects that merge data science, naval architecture, and sustainability. You may be given one or more of the following projects below depending on your skillset.

Optimise hull-performance analytics

— link Python models in Databricks and Microsoft Fabric with Power BI and speed up large-data analysis and visualisation.

Explore marine fouling and coatings

— analyse data to understand how vessel operation (idle time, speed, etc..) and paint technology affect vessel performance.

Develop a “Fouling Pressure Index.”

Based on sea data such as temperature, sediment and current.

Compare global weather datasets

to simulate their impact on vessel performance KPIs.

Train AI models

to estimate vessel resistance from high-frequency onboard data.

Implement empirical and physics-based models

derived from the latest research publication to improve our vessel performance tools. Area of interest are wind and wave resistance, wind assisted propulsion system.

Reimagine dashboards

— make data stories clearer, faster, and more visual. Derive actionable insights from our data.
