Job Location This recruitment is for the Limon Correctional Facility.
Description Of Job The Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a General Maintenance Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; training and overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations and ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant completion of assigned tasks.
Safety and Security Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforce security procedures; conduct work site searches; respond to emergency situations; maintain inmate counts and transport; comply with agency regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline.
Operations Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost‑effective operations of building and grounds construction, janitorial operations, repair or maintenance.
Building Maintenance Maintain facility buildings, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, remodeling and repairs; train inmates in modifying and remodeling of prison buildings constructed of various materials; provide instruction in design, installation and repair & maintenance of all facility structures.
Grounds Maintenance Maintain facility grounds, including irrigation systems, sprinkler lines, pipelines, valves, supply ditches and gates; train inmates in all aspects of grounds maintenance; responsible for snow removal throughout the complex.
Supervision Provide supervision of assigned inmate work crew; promote high performance; train and instruct staff and inmates in proper use of tools, equipment and procedures; manage inmate hiring, scheduling, pay, and grievance resolution; inspect work and perform inmate evaluations.
Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance.
Or, a minimum of two (2) years of such experience combined with correctional experience, including security related duties such as detaining, controlling movement and escorting inmates, conducting counts and searches.
Successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or accredited vocational or trade school may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Proficiency in building and grounds maintenance.
Ability to read blueprints, conduct research, create material and labor lists with cost estimates, and implement projects from start to finish.
Effective communication with inmates and staff, providing verbal and/or written instructions.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to inspire teamwork.
Ability to train, coach and mentor inmate workers for community reentry.
Ability to respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies.
Physical ability to climb ladders, stairs, work in high, tight and confined spaces and outside during inclement weather.
Strong self‑control and resilience under stress.
English language proficiency.
Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
Related Building/Equipment or Grounds Maintenance employment experience within the last 5 years.
Project Management employment experience.
Supervisory experience.
Relevant licenses or certifications such as electrical, water, plumbing, HVAC, vehicle maintenance, etc.
Conditions of Employment
Must be 21 years of age.
Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
Possess a high school diploma or GED.
Have no felony convictions.
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
Successfully pass all modules of the six‑week CDOC Basic Training, including defensive tactics, health and safety, and required examinations.
Physical capability to complete defensive tactics including lifting, striking, restraining and climbing requirements.
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment.
Must be able to see and hear for safety purposes.
Will be required to perform under various shift schedules, including nights and graveyards.
TB screening is required upon hire.
Background Investigation Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Applicants must provide official disposition of any criminal charges.
Drug and Substance Policy The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees may use marijuana in personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence. A drug test will be administered to all new employees and random drug screening will occur throughout employment. POST‑certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana.
