This position is a General Maintenance Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections at the Sterling correctional facility. Primary responsibilities include overseeing an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations, ensuring safety and security, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant completion of assigned tasks.
Overview This position promotes the CDOC Mission and Vision with integrity and commitment. It involves supervising inmate crews, coordinating with other staff, managing materials and inventory, and supporting the operations of facility maintenance and repairs.
Responsibilities
Train and oversee an inmate work crew in general building trades, grounds maintenance, and janitorial operations.
Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; enforce security procedures; conduct site inspections; monitor inmate behavior; and respond to emergencies.
Supervise building maintenance tasks including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, remodeling, and repairs; instruct inmates in modifications and remodeling of facility structures.
Oversee grounds maintenance including irrigation systems, lawn care, snow removal, and related projects; coordinate with staff to ensure safe and efficient completion of projects.
Coordinate with other projects, supervisors, and managers to optimize resource use; manage inventory and control loss or theft.
Supervise inmate crews, train staff and inmates in tools, PPE, safety practices, and procedures; document performance and conduct inmate evaluations.
Participate in inmate hiring, assign tasks, track hours, and address grievances; ensure compliance with agency policies and timelines.
Assist with additional duties as assigned; may supervise additional inmate crews in the absence of other supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
Four (4) years of employment experience in building/equipment maintenance or a combination of building and grounds maintenance. Part-time experience will be prorated.
Building/Equipment Maintenance experience includes carpentry, plumbing, welding, machinery/equipment repair, electrical work, and related tasks on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
Grounds Maintenance experience includes installation/maintenance of irrigation systems, landscaping, concrete work, asphalt patching, fence building, and snow removal.
OR a combination of at least two (2) years of employment as described above plus correctional experience related to security duties (detaining, movement control, searches, and inmate supervision).
Formal substitutions: apprenticeship or degree from an accredited vocational/technical school may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.
Work experience in the application must be complete and documented in the Work Experience section; resumes alone are not accepted for compensation purposes.
Preferred Qualifications
Related Building/Equipment or Grounds Maintenance experience within the last 5 years.
Project Management experience.
Supervisory Experience.
License or Certification in a related field (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.).
Additional Information
Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license; must maintain a safe driving record consistent with State policy.
High school diploma or GED required; no felony convictions allowing contact with offenders; eligible to work in the United States (e-Verify used).
Successful completion of background checks and the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, which includes defensive tactics and related assessments.
Subject to meeting medical screening requirements; may be required to travel and work various shifts, including overtime or exposure to inclement weather.
