as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. This role supports the maintenance and repair of all public works vehicles and equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
Responsibilities
LEVEL I – TRAINEE
– Assist mechanics and complete routine repairs and preventive maintenance on trucks, heavy road maintenance equipment, and specialized vehicles.
LEVEL II – APPRENTICE
– Perform mechanical work on heavy-duty vehicles, diagnose major system repairs, and conduct preventive maintenance. Operate automated Maintenance Management Systems to order parts and record labor.
LEVEL III – MECHANIC
– Execute advanced mechanical repairs, including engine, transmission, hydraulic, brake, steering, and suspension systems. Provide emergency road repair and proficient fabrication and welding.
LEVEL IV – SENIOR MECHANIC
– Lead all mechanics, perform expert repairs on major systems, diagnose complex issues, and train peers. Lead emergency roadside service and ensure compliance with federal safety regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
LEVEL I – TRAINEE:
High School Diploma/GED; 1 year mechanical maintenance experience or equivalent. Valid driver’s license.
LEVEL II – APPRENTICE:
High School Diploma/GED; 2 years heavy-duty truck or road maintenance experience or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Obtain Class A CDL within one year of hire.
LEVEL III – MECHANIC:
High School Diploma/GED; 4 years heavy-duty truck or road maintenance experience or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Class A CDL. 2 ASE certifications.
LEVEL IV – SENIOR MECHANIC:
6 years mechanical or fabrication experience. High School Diploma/GED; 6 years heavy-duty truck or road maintenance experience or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Class A CDL. 4 ASE certifications.
Tool & Certification Allowance The position includes a $1,000 annual tool allowance. ASE Certification incentives are available for Levels II–IV, providing wage increases per certification earned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficient in mechanical, electrical, and computerized diagnostic tools.
Strong fabrication and welding skills, with experience in metal fabrication and shop tools.
Excellent safety practices, reading, and following work instructions.
Capability to work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays and lift up to 60 lbs.
Effective communication with supervisors and coworkers, both verbal and written.
