Position Summary The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) and the College of Engineering at The University of Alabama invite applications for tenure-track positions at the rank of Associate Professor. Candidates with a research emphasis in the areas of Biomechanics and Biosystems Engineering, Robotics and Mechatronics, Sustainable Energy, Clean Energy, and Combustion, Advanced Manufacturing including Integrated and Interconnected Systems, Multi-scale Computation and Simulation, or Micro/Nanoscale Systems and Engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.
The ME department offers an ABET-accredited B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a recent B.S. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering. It supports active M.S. and Ph.D. programs with a sustained graduate enrollment of over 185 students. Teaching, research, and service constitute the core mission of the department and college.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to lead an extramurally funded, highly productive research program with significant scholarly impact in a focus area of potential long-term growth. Collaboration with existing faculty, both within the department and across the college, is highly desirable. Candidates should show an ability to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise and to contribute to the delivery of the department’s core degree programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
Demonstrated record of prior research work and impactful scholarly publications in refereed journals, conference proceedings, and similarly impactful venues.
Demonstrated interest and/or record in mechanical engineering education and professional service in area(s) of specialization.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Potential to construct and sustain a quality research program.
Potential for excellent teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Applicants must also meet all university criteria for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of experience as a tenure-track/tenured faculty member at a leading peer R1 institution.
Demonstrated record of high-quality research and scholarly publications that is recognized nationally and/or internationally.
Significant record of scholarship in an engineering department with undergraduate and graduate programs.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
