Construction Manager - Conventional Generation
Black & Veatch Corporation, a 100-year legacy of sustainable infrastructure, seeks a Construction Manager for projects that include conventional generation. The role is staff, full‑time, and requires placement on site with travel.
Job Summary As part of the BV Construction group, you will develop and enhance your skills in an on‑site, hands‑on environment. You will provide expert training, career development, and career advancement to support safety, quality, and final product excellence. Functions include safety, field management, construction management, quality control, start‑up, decommissioning, and field engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and coordinate all on‑site subcontractor activities for compliance with the CPM schedule and enforce subcontract requirements.
Manage site access coordination.
Implement the Project Construction Execution Plan and supervise all superintendents, providing leadership and monitoring their activities.
Monitor and report on construction productivity and schedule performance (including trends) to the Site Manager and Field Project Controls Manager.
Take actions necessary to meet project budget and schedule requirements and direct the establishment of subcontractor schedule recovery plans.
Coordinate the Construction Completion Walkdowns, hand over start‑up packages to the Startup Manager, and supervise punch list close‑out.
Assist the Site Manager with client interface and relations and coordinate with the Field Material Manager to review all site‑procured materials for acceptance.
Perform periodic field audits with the Materials Manager to verify proper storage of owner‑supplied equipment.
Review and approve T&M construction contractor equipment and coordinate shared use.
Participate in the monthly contractor management meeting; lead the meeting if the Project Field Manager is unavailable.
Conduct weekly coordination meetings with subcontractors, manage weekly schedule and commodity installation status, and monitor all extra work authorization requests, backcharges, and payment requests.
Adhere to Safety, Quality, Ethical Standards, Lessons Learned, and Performance Management programs per Division policies and contract commitments.
Manage timely responses to contractor RFIs, complete the construction punchlist, and act as Safety Representative as needed.
Resolve safety and quality issues with the Safety and Quality Managers, deferring disputes to the Site Manager when necessary.
Understand major commercial and deliverable terms of construction subcontracts and manage within these terms.
Monitor and control overtime by subordinates and subcontractors.
Write the construction portion of the client and construction monthly report and coordinate with Field Engineers or home office engineers on engineering deliverables.
Manage construction manufacturer's service technicians and timesheet tracking.
Identify and assess improvement opportunities that add value, champion continuous improvement efforts, support change management, and encourage staff engagement in improvement activities.
Supervise superintendents and adhere to safety and quality standards as applicable to duties and accountabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of construction technology (Simple Cycle, Combined Cycle, Circulating Fluidized Bed, Nuclear).
Understanding of the EPC industry, constructability, and project budget processes.
Experience with project controls, risk assessment/management, and administrative policies.
Familiarity with Construction Project Management Systems and conceptual planning.
Conflict management, leadership (team building, coaching, mentoring, change management), and multi‑tasking skills.
Presentation, problem‑solving, communication, and meeting skills.
Time‑reporting and expense‑reporting competency.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
14+ years construction supervisory experience required, with at least 3 years previous construction manager experience.
OSHA Training.
Must complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, motor‑vehicle records search) as applicable.
Certifications OSHA Training is required.
Work Environment & Physical Demands Physical Demands
Lift and carry heavy items up to 50 pounds.
Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move, and walk long distances in confined, cluttered spaces.
Use hands to handle or sense objects, tools, or controls.
Perform repetitive movements and work above 5 feet in height.
Climb and balance on steel framework, ladders, and scaffolds.
Work up to a 12‑hour shift in varying temperature extremes and outside conditions.
Work Environment
Typical construction site: cramped spaces, awkward positions, hot (above 90 °F) or cold (below 32 °F) temperatures, dust, wind, snow, rain, and bright or low lighting.
Exposure to hazardous equipment and high noise levels.
Typical office environment may also be required.
