About the College/Unit/Department University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full‑time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers.
Work Schedule: M‑F, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (some evening and weekend work may be required)
Salary: $42,000 (start date: 12/15/2025)

Position Summary The primary function of this journeyman level position is repair, installation and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning and heating units in the residence halls. This position supports 9 residential communities accommodating approximately 8,000 residents.
Key Responsibilities
Respond to written and verbal, as well as computerized work order requests in a timely manner.
Install, repair, maintain and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and related equipment within the residence halls, including exterior locations no higher than 20 feet.
Overhaul and service refrigeration, air conditioning, heating units by repairing, replacing and adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, water and vacuum pumps.
Test refrigeration equipment for leaks; repair or adjust valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings.
Remove and install motors, thermostats and humidistats.
Adjust pressure solenoids and expansion valves.
Add refrigerant to units, weighing carefully.
Record amounts and types of refrigerant required by EPA.
Perform inspections related to preventive maintenance and schedule filter changes as necessary.
Safely operate and use various tools associated with the HVAC trade.
Maintain shop area clean, inventoried, stocked and organized.
Participate in maintenance after hours on‑call program as required.
Perform summer work assignments including implementation of special projects and safety inspections; supervise students or temporary employees on assigned projects.
Other duties consistent with the purpose and scope of this position, which may be assigned.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Technical knowledge in the HVAC/Refrigeration trade through apprenticeship, formal training programs or on‑the‑job training.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum 4 years of experience as a journeyman level HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic that may include apprenticeship or applicable vocational training; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Refrigerant handling certification (continue education for renewal).
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Skill in troubleshooting and repair of HVAC‑related electrical components.
Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the HVAC trade.
Knowledge of local and state electrical codes, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches and diagrams of residential buildings.
Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with supervisors, staff and residents.
Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups.
Proven teamwork and independent decision‑making abilities.
Proficiency in using computer applications including the work order system, payroll system, Microsoft Office Suite, UGA email and employee websites.
Physical Demands
Climb stairs, ladders and scaffolds, work from a ladder or scaffold.
Bend at the waist and knees.
Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
Use hand tools and power tools.
Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
Crawl to complete various tasks.
Perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
Safely operate a UGA state vehicle.
