We are looking for a full‑time Staff Attorney to work on housing matters in our Peekskill office. The attorney will serve low‑income individuals and families in Northern Westchester and Putnam County courts, addressing eviction, unlawful lock‑outs, habitability issues, succession rights challenges, Section 8 and other voucher hearings.
Responsibilities
Individual case work and administrative advocacy in city and justice courts
Litigation, including appellate practice related to housing matters
Conduct education and outreach for community members, advocates, and service providers
Adhere to program and case‑handling standards, funder requirements, and professional ethics
Provide resources to LSHV staff and access‑to‑justice communities; attend night courts as needed
Qualifications
Admission to the New York State Bar or pending admission; out‑of‑state admission eligible for pro hac vice; 2025 law graduates may apply when planning to sit for the NYS Bar Exam
One or more years of legal experience, including litigation and handling a high‑volume caseload
Excellent people, written, and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage high‑stress situations and to collaborate with diverse stakeholders
Valid driver's license and personal transportation
Preferred
Demonstrated commitment to serving low‑income persons with prior experience in legal services or a similar program
English and Spanish bilingualism
Salary and
Salary: $76,997 – $130,164 DOE, union scale. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long‑term disability, 403(b) contribution, loan repayment assistance, and paid parental leave. After a brief probationary period, the position may permit up to two work‑from‑home days per week.
