Senior Safety Manager – Substations
Location:
Hybrid/Remote (Maryland-based with regional site travel)

Compensation:
Base Salary
$130,000 – $170,000

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled
Senior Safety Manager
to oversee safety programs and field safety performance across
substation construction
and
overhead/underground distribution
projects. This role supports operations across Maryland and the Mid‑Atlantic region, partnering closely with field leadership, project management, and utility clients—particularly
Exelon
and other IOUs/co‑ops.
The Senior Safety Manager will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety initiatives that ensure compliance, reduce risk, and reinforce a best‑in‑class safety culture across all utility construction activities.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, lead, and continuously enhance safety policies, procedures, and training programs specific to
substation
and
distribution
operations.
Provide safety leadership to project teams, field crews, subcontractors, and client stakeholders.
Conduct regular safety audits, jobsite inspections, and hazard assessments across active projects.
Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, utility‑owner requirements, NESC standards, and other applicable regulations.
Lead incident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and corrective action implementation.
Manage safety reporting, performance metrics, and documentation for both internal use and client requirements.
Training, Coaching & Workforce Development
Deliver targeted training aligned with substation and distribution work practices (LOTO, switching, electrical safe work practices, rigging, grounding, etc.).
Mentor and coach field personnel to strengthen safety ownership and hazard recognition.
Support onboarding and competency assessments for new hires, subcontractors, and craft personnel.
Client & Stakeholder Coordination
Serve as the primary safety liaison with
Exelon utilities , co‑ops, IOUs, and project partners.
Participate in pre‑job planning meetings, client audits, and safety expectation briefings.
Collaborate with project managers and construction leaders to ensure safe work planning and continuous improvement.
Strategic Safety Initiatives
li>Identify areas for improvement and implement proactive safety measures tailored to substation environments and high‑voltage distribution work. Lead cross‑functional safety initiatives, safety stand‑downs, and company‑wide programs.
the integration of new technology, tools, and procedures that enhance worker safety.
Qualifications & Experience Required
7–10+ years of safety management experience in
utility construction ,
substations ,
T&D , or heavy electrical infrastructure.
Strong working knowledge of substation construction practices, electrical hazards, grounding, and energized work protocols.
Experience working with or supporting
Exelon
utilities or other large IOUs.
Proven ability to lead field safety across multi‑site or regional project portfolios.
OSHA 30 (minimum); CSP, CUSP, CHST, or equivalent certifications strongly preferred.
Ability to travel regularly across Maryland and the Mid‑Atlantic region.
Preferred
Previous leadership experience overseeing a regional or multi‑project safety program.
Experience with EPC or turnkey utility construction.
Familiarity with contractor management systems (ISN, Avetta) and digital safety tools.
Bonus:
