Summary
St. Cloud VA Health Care System is seeking a Medical Director for the Mental Health Integrated Clinical Community (MH ICC). The incumbent is a licensed psychiatrist with broad experience in general medicine and psychiatry, serving as medical leadership and guidance to a large multidisciplinary staff. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements (if applicable) in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an approved school for the year of completion.
Full and unrestricted medical license in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification.
Residency programs approved by ACGME or AOA, or other U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the U.S.
Currently enrolled residents in accredited programs eligible as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs) if they meet the basic requirements.
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-based basis.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Prior mental health experience, previous leadership experience, board certified or board eligible in psychiatry.
Physical Requirements: Primarily sedentary with occasional walking, standing, bending, and light carrying.
Duties
Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for outpatient and inpatient mental health patients across a wide age range.
Provide coverage on the Acute Mental Health Unit (15 beds) and consult various CBOCs, outpatient clinics, and residential rehabilitation programs.
Lead program development and implementation of evidence-based psychiatry practices.
Administer and supervise all psychiatrists assigned to the MH ICC and the health care system.
Clinical duties (≈70% of time): direct patient care, unit transfers, mental health consults, and adherence to public health and infection control policies.
Participate in performance improvement activities, VISN-wide policy implementation, and quality initiatives.
Administrative duties (≈30% of time): scheduling outpatient psychiatry clinic assignments, attending clinical and administrative meetings, and driving quality improvement.
Mentor residents, interns, and trainees.
Provide weekend and holiday on‑call coverage throughout the year.
Assist with other duties assigned by the MH ICC Director.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $290,000 – $335,000/year.
Annual performance bonus and regular salary increases.
Competitive paid time off: 50–55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, 5 CME days).
Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution.
Federal health, vision, dental, life, and long‑term care insurance; many programs carried into retirement.
Full, unrestricted state license required; CME reimbursement up to $1,000/year.
Free malpractice liability protection with tail coverage.
No employment contract; moonlighting is unrestricted.
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 am‑4:30 pm with evening and weekend rotations.
