Job Summary
This position is located in the Department of General Services (DGS). The position involves the assembly, installation, modification, and repair of pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes. Work is performed from building plans, blueprints, and sketches that are used to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities The incumbent performs a wide array of essential plumbing tasks, demonstrating versatility across various environments, from routine maintenance such as fixing leaky faucets and unclogging drains to the installation of complex plumbing systems in specialized facilities like morgues and medical buildings. Their role demands meticulous attention to detail as they interpret blueprints and plans, expertly cutting, joining, threading, and soldering pipes of diverse materials. A significant portion of their work involves navigating intricate structural layouts, operating tools like torches, and installing fixtures while strictly adhering to safety standards and local plumbing codes. They also contribute to critical fire safety infrastructure by maintaining and repairing automatic sprinkler systems. Skilled professionals operate autonomously, managing assignments based on work orders and plans, while also providing guidance to less experienced staff. District Plumbers are integral to ensuring that water and other vital systems flow smoothly, safely, and efficiently throughout essential government buildings.
Qualifications and Experience Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position, equipping the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties. To be creditable, the incumbent must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
Licensures and Certifications
Journeyman's Plumber License and backflow device certification.
Valid driver's license.
Work Environment Work is performed inside and outside, in all kinds of weather, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent may be required to make repairs and installations in areas with unpleasant fumes. Frequent exposure to uncomfortable heat, falls from ladders, strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and infections may occur.
Other Significant Factors Tour of Duty: The incumbent serves on a rotating shift basis and is subject to emergency calls.
