Work Location : Fully remote. Available only for residents of the following states: AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI & WY.

Position Summary Evaluates medical records, provides clinical and surgical abstraction and assigns appropriate clinical diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines.

Core Functions

Analyze medical information from records, accurately code diagnostic and procedural information per national coding guidelines, consult with providers for missing data, achieve timely and accurate coding in compliance with department productivity and quality standards, code ICD‑CM and CPT‑4 for accurate assignment, address NCCI edits, reconcile charges as required.

Abstract clinical diagnoses, procedure codes and other pertinent information into the electronic medical records, seek missing data, create complete records, refer inconsistent information to coding quality analysts or supervisors for clarification.

Provide quality assurance for medical records, ensuring compliance with coding rules and regulations for state Medicaid plans, CMS, OIG and HCFA, as well as company and professional standards.

Compile daily and monthly reports and tabulate data for research or analysis as assigned.

Work independently under supervision, apply specialized knowledge for accurate assignment of ICD/CPT codes, seek guidance when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED or equivalent experience, plus specialized training in medical record keeping principles, anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical terminology, standard nomenclature, and classification of diagnoses and operations, or an associate’s degree in a related healthcare field.

Certification: CPC, CCS, CCS‑P, CCA, CPC‑A, RHIA, RHIT in active status with AHIMA or AAPC; general or specialty area acceptable.

At least six months providing professional coding services or comparable healthcare experience across various facilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of ICD and CPT coding principles per AHIMA competencies, and proven by AAPC certification.

Ability to work effectively in a remote setting, using office programs, coding software and abstracting systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Specialty certification in surgical oncology or related area.

Additional related education or experience.

Requirements

Minimum 1 year recent experience in E/M surgical oncology coding, clearly reflected in resume.

Current certification through AAPC or AHIMA—must exceed CPC‑A level.

Open to other coder positions if not meeting above; check other opportunities.

Additional Information Hours are flexible with 8‑hour shifts between 5 am‑7 pm (Mon‑Fri). The position is fully remote; only available to listed states. Banner Health is a nationally recognized healthcare leader with multiple awards, including Great Place To Work® certification.
