Job Description
The Tax Senior Manager, Nonprofit (Senior Manager) is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex nonprofit tax issues.
The Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax disclosure, exemption, and unrelated business income issues, recognizes and communicates potential risks, and makes top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The role is a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team, actively participating in marketing and networking within the area of expertise and maintaining client relationships.
Responsibilities Tax Compliance
Ensures client and firm compliance with all applicable authorities, minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
Conducts review of T/R’s and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate.
Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
Reviews Forms 990, 990‑PF and 990‑T workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements.
Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including budgeting and staffing, monitoring engagement process, billing, collection of A/R, client relationship management, and timely advice.
Research
Identifies complex issues to be researched as needed; frames issues and reports analysis clearly and concisely.
Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
Tax Consulting
Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce taxes.
Applies combination of tax knowledge and business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions.
Develops and implements a work plan to include/organize the Specialized Tax Services (STS) assistance on ongoing projects.
Serves as a technical resource to peers within the region.
Manages written or phone inquiries from federal and state agencies with little or no assistance.
Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA).
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or staff.
Reviews studies of tax implications and offers alternative courses of action.
Researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including experimentation with promising new strategies.
Identifies lessons learned on prior projects and offers input on process improvement.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises RISE Nonprofit Tax Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by the Nonprofit Tax team and provides review comments.
Trains team on current software tools and research skills.
Acts as a career advisor and provides performance feedback.
Schedules and manages workload and delegates projects and issues effectively.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics OR any other field with a CPA certification, required.
Master’s degree in Accountancy or Taxation, preferred.
Experience
Eight (8) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience, required.
Supervisory experience, required.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent)
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role, preferred.
Software
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, required.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software, preferred.

Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision‑making skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment.
Ability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.

Executive presence and ability to serve as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions.
Individual salaries are determined after consideration of multiple factors, including qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
Salary ranges: Illinois: $140,000 - $190,000 Minnesota: $130,000 - $190,000 NYC/Long Island/Westchester: $150,000 - $200,000
