About the Position
Under general direction, plans, organizes and supervises the function, activities, and staff of an engineering section; performs civil engineering and administrative work in a variety of public works projects; participates in the formulation of County policy related to engineering; and performs related work as required.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in the Community Services Department. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
Senior Licensed Engineer The Senior Licensed Engineer is within the Engineering and Capital Projects Division of the Washoe County Community Services Department, and performs a wide variety of engineering review duties, including providing customer service, assisting customers over the phone, via electronic communication, in person, in the office with application and permitting processes specific to the CSD, as well as in the field on project sites.
The individual in this position will deal with extremely detail-oriented work, requiring an exceptionally high level of accuracy. The individual in this role is expected to learn, retain, and recall a wide variety of information and can communicate that information to members of the public as well as to train and mentor other staff members including Licensed Engineers, Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, Inspectors, Engineering Technicians, and Public Service Interns.
License or Certificate Registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Nevada or a jurisdiction recognized for purposes of reciprocity by the Nevada State Board of Registered Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is required at the time of application and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
A valid driver's license is required at the time of application and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
Background Checks and Policies Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position or a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.
The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Senior Licensed Engineer position.
Ideal Candidate Criteria
Be skilled in the design and review of sanitary sewer and high-quality recycled water infrastructure, to support three wastewater reclamation facilities and associated collection systems.
Be skilled in the design and review of storm water management plans, including hydrologic, hydraulic, and sedimentation transport analysis.
Be skilled in the design and review of subdivision projects, including grading, drainage, utilities, pavement, striping, and signage design.
Be skilled in the design and review of transportation management projects, including roadway design, pavement management, and traffic impact analysis.
Be skilled in the review of entitlement applications.
Enjoy working in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment, assisting the general public, other local agency staff, department staff, and County staff.
Be timely, dependable, and reliable, and possess the ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
