Job Description and Duties Under the direction of the Area Senior Construction Engineer (a Senior Transportation Engineer) the incumbent will serve as the licensed Professional Resident Engineer on construction projects. The role requires assigning work, providing instructions, making decisions on complex engineering and administrative problems, and directing work on a range of transportation projects.
Administer construction contracts and support contract administration paperwork and documentation.
Apply knowledge of Caltrans Construction Manual, Standard Specifications, and Special Provisions.
Oversee highway and bridge construction, design engineering, and cost estimating activities.
Coordinate and assign field work, lead site teams, and provide clear direction to contractors and staff.
Communicate with contractors to resolve conflicts and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Interpret and enforce Caltrans plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Assume responsibility for safety compliance, including wearing hardhat, safety vest, and eye protection on site.
Qualifications
Valid California Professional Engineer license (Civil) required for Range D appointment.
Completion of the Transportation Engineer (Civil) written hurdle exam (online or in‑person) as required by the classification.
Proficiency in Civil engineering subjects, contract administration, and construction project management.
Ability to analyze complex engineering problems and provide effective solutions.
Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to lead team activities.
Working Conditions
Night work, field work, earthwork, paving operations, lab work, and exposure to outdoor weather conditions, chemicals, and noise.
Travel to various job sites throughout California; long‑term travel may be required.
Work may involve flexible hours, shift changes, and geographic transfers.
Rotation Program The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24‑ to 33‑month rotation assignment for all permanent, full‑time employees who have completed probation. Purpose: to provide diverse project delivery experience through core assignments in design and construction units and a mandatory elective assignment. Rotations may involve long‑term travel.
