NIA Community Services Network
In partnership with the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE), ExpandED Schools LIT C.R.E.W. offers middle school students:
- 3-5 more hours per week of engagement in literacy during afterschool
- Selection of diverse reading texts that support students' interests and voice
- Allows students the time and opportunity they need to improve academically, by building and exercising vocabulary techniques, supporting their comprehension skills
- Smaller group environment that supports student learning, project‑based enrichment, and overall experience
- Opportunity to showcase literacy work at an end‑of‑year student convening
Duties & Responsibilities
- Literacy educators will instruct students 3-5 times a week in small group settings to supplement and enhance reading comprehension using vocabulary techniques during in‑class reading/English language arts instruction.
- Literacy educators will prepare weekly lesson plans per a set program curriculum, supporting the individual needs of each student.
- Literacy educators will work with at least two groups of seven to fifteen students each, at least three times a week, leading students through high‑interest texts (novels, non‑fiction chapter books, short stories, articles, etc.) using a vetted curricular model.
- Literacy educators will work with the Program Manager, site director, classroom teachers, school administration, and parents to maximize student achievement.
- Literacy educators may have additional opportunities to share special interests or talents and work with students on enrichment areas in addition to small group reading instruction.
- Literacy educators will be responsible for creating and submitting a basic budget plan, outlining any associated materials for their work with students.
- Literacy educators will dedicate at least two hours a week to support the planning of literacy work.
- Literacy educators must be available to attend professional development training by ExpandED Schools, supporting their literacy development, instructional support, and classroom management.
Required Education And Experience
- At least two years of college credit toward a bachelor’s degree or an associate’s degree (Preferred)
- Avid reader who has a desire to elicit a passion for reading in young people
- Background in the following arts: Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Digital Media, Journalism (Preferred)
- Willingness to serve after 2:00 PM at a NYC public middle school and commit to working Monday‑Friday (approximately 15‑20 hours per week) through the 2024‑2025 school year
Special Considerations
All literacy educators must undergo a fingerprinting/criminal background check as per regulations with the employer and partake in the Lit C.R.E.W. training overview facilitated by ExpandED Schools to start in this role.
