Mainframe Storage Engineer (Tape Focus) Location: Plano, Texas or Richmond, VA Duration: 18+ Months Rate: $58-$62/hour Role Overview We are seeking a
mid to senior-level Mainframe Storage Engineer
(510 years experience) to join our systems engineering team. This role will primarily focus on
tape storage engineering , providing technical expertise across system design, build, development, implementation, maintenance, and client support. The engineer will also contribute to technical documentation and project planning while ensuring reliability and efficiency in mainframe storage environments. Responsibilities
Lead systems engineering activities supporting Mainframe (System z) storage projects of varying complexity. Design, implement, and maintain
tape-focused storage solutions . Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and standards. Support migrations, upgrades, and implementation of new MF storage technologies. Provide troubleshooting, operational support, and client interaction as needed. Work independently, taking ownership of assigned deliverables. Contribute to project planning and execution with strong organizational and PM skills. Must-Have Skills
510 years experience as a
Mainframe Storage Engineer . Strong
Tape Systems expertise , including IBM TAPE GRID configurations. Experience with
Hitachi Vantara DASD synchronous and asynchronous replication . Knowledge of
Broadcom (Brocade) FICON directors and channel extension . Hands-on with storage tools/utilities such as
ACC/SRS, ACS, DFHSM, ICKDSF, CA1, User Catalogs, ABARS, TDMF, DFDSS . Technical documentation / writing ability. Strong problem-solving and ownership mindset. Proficiency in
SAS, Visio, MS Office, REXX . Familiarity with
Assembler and CLIST
scripting. Conceptual understanding of Mainframe operations. Preferred / Nice-to-Have
Prior experience with large-scale
storage implementation projects
(enhancements, upgrades, migrations). Industry background in
financial services, insurance, or large enterprise environments . Demonstrated success working with minimal supervision in a high-paced environment.
