Job Description:
  • The Phlebotomy Technician collects and processes patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other biological samples, while following established procedures.
  • The role ensures accuracy and integrity of specimens, maintains patient records, and provides excellent customer service.
  • Technicians demonstrate proper venipuncture techniques, adhere to safety regulations, and support laboratory operations efficiently.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate work areas.
  • Update patient information accurately.
  • Explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection process clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate proper technique using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and follow all physician orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport according to protocol.
  • Store specimens at required temperatures in appropriate containers.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings and answer telephone inquiries as needed.
Requirement/Must Have:
  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Flexibility to handle variable workloads and patient needs.
  • Comfort performing venipunctures on difficult draws ( hard sticks ).
  • Strong customer service skills.
