Job Description:
- The Phlebotomy Technician collects and processes patient specimens, including blood, urine, and other biological samples, while following established procedures.
- The role ensures accuracy and integrity of specimens, maintains patient records, and provides excellent customer service.
- Technicians demonstrate proper venipuncture techniques, adhere to safety regulations, and support laboratory operations efficiently.
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate work areas.
- Update patient information accurately.
- Explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection process clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate proper technique using straight and butterfly needles.
- Understand and follow all physician orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport according to protocol.
- Store specimens at required temperatures in appropriate containers.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings and answer telephone inquiries as needed.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
- Minimum of 6 months experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Flexibility to handle variable workloads and patient needs.
- Comfort performing venipunctures on difficult draws ( hard sticks ).
