The LA County Board of Supervisors declared a local state of emergency for homelessness. The County is expanding its response to address housing, mental health, and substance abuse. This emergency position seeks qualified, passionate individuals to support the mission.
Under the emergency order, candidates may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with a potential for permanent employment. Assessment during this period is weighted 100 %. Successful completion may lead to permanent appointment as Consumer and Business Affairs Representative I.
Essential Job Functions
Assist in providing resources and information to consumers, workers, immigrants, tenants, landlords, litigants, and business representatives on laws and programs.
Gather pertinent information to determine complaint validity and make referrals.
Review allegations of consumer product misrepresentation, unfair or deceptive business practices, and ordinance violations; research and apply relevant laws.
Investigate and mediate disputes between consumers, tenants, landlords, and businesses.
Interview stakeholders to ascertain factual information.
Research and apply statutes, regulations, and ordinances to respond to public inquiries; attend training and utilize resources.
Assist the public with completing service forms and clarifying questions.
Evaluate correspondence to determine if disputes are resolved; contact parties for additional information.
Participate in field investigations, undercover visits, and consumer interviews to ensure compliance.
Maintain accurate case notes and records; scan documents for retention.
Conduct financial navigation sessions and financial empowerment presentations.
Develop best practices, conduct environmental scans related to financial empowerment for domestic‑violence survivors.
Create program flyers, social media content, e‑newsletters, and suggest calendar formatting.
Research public records and data sources as needed.
Disseminate printed information and educational material letters.
Attend community events and present on consumer‑related matters.
Compile statistics on contacts, surveys, and analyze consumer trends.
Prepare investigation reports, board reports, letters, and emails.
Staff a branch office as needed.
Minimum Requirements (Training & Experience)
Option 1: Three months experience assisting the public in a consumer protection agency.
Option 2: Six months experience assisting the public in law, legal services, employment, housing, credit, loans, insurance, real estate, landlord‑tenant, court procedures, dispute settlement, mediation, or similar services.
Option 3: Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from an accredited college or university.
Option 4: Completion of sophomore year with emphasis in Consumer Science, Home Economics, Administration of Justice, Political Science, Law, Public Administration, or related fields.
Option 5: Completion of one year of a paralegal program.
Applicants must meet at least one of the above options to be considered for this vacancy.
